Second, there is now an air gap between the board and the slab. Sound that passes into the board loses energy in that cavity instead of reflecting cleanly, which takes the hard edge off the room. Speech and TV audio in particular become easier on the ear.

Bulkheads around the perimeter and dropped sections over key areas also shorten the tall, hard volume that makes double-height spaces ring.
The ceiling works best as part of a team. Curtains, rugs, fabric sofas and full bookshelves absorb what the ceiling scatters, and together they change the character of a room far more than any single element can on its own.
