How to Install Plaster Ceiling Lights & Downlights (Step-by-Step)

What is the correct order to install ceiling lights?

Whether the ceiling is brand new or already in place, the installation follows the same six steps:

  1. Plan the layout on the ceiling plan, around the furniture and the ceiling framing.
  2. First-fix the wiring, run and secure the cables in the ceiling void before the boards close, or fish them through the void on a retrofit.
  3. Mark and cut the openings with a hole saw sized to each fitting.
  4. Connect the drivers and terminals safely at every light point.
  5. Clip in the fittings and seat the trims flush with the board.
  6. Test the circuits and confirm every switching zone behaves as planned.

Step 1: plan the layout before anyone cuts

Downlight positions are decided on paper first. A simple ceiling plan marked with sofas, beds, worktops and walkways shows where light is actually needed; from there, positions are set to the furniture rather than to a rigid grid. Just as important is what sits above the board. A plaster ceiling hangs on a hidden skeleton of framing, and the void also carries air-conditioning trunking and existing cables. The layout must be checked against all of it, because a downlight cannot sit where a framing member runs.

Step 2: first-fix the wiring, new build vs retrofit

In a new ceiling, wiring is the classic first fix. While the framing is up and the ceiling is still open, cables are run from the switch points to every planned light position, secured tidily and left with generous slack loops at each point. Only when every run is in place and checked do the boards go up. This is the cheapest, cleanest moment lighting wiring will ever have, everything is reachable and nothing has to be cut.

Retrofit is the same job through a letterbox. Cables are fished across the closed void from an access point or from the first opening to the next, guided around framing and trunking by feel and flexible rods. It works well in most homes, but it depends on clearance inside the void and a workable route; an experienced installer will confirm both before promising a layout.

Steps 3 to 5: cutting the openings and fitting the lights

Openings are marked from the plan, then each position is double-checked for framing and services before the drill starts. The hole is cut with a hole saw matched to the cut-out size stated by the fitting manufacturer, not to the visible face of the fitting, which is always larger. A clean, correctly sized hole lets the spring clips grip and the trim sit flush.

At each opening, the cable is drawn down and terminated safely, the driver is connected, and the driver body is rested beside the hole inside the void so it can be retrieved later for service. The fitting then clips in, the trim seats against the board, and the ceiling looks untouched.

Step 6: test the circuits and switching zones

Before the job is called finished, every circuit is tested and the room is walked switch by switch. Each zone, general downlights, cove strip, feature or pendant lights, should come on independently, dimmers should sweep smoothly without flicker, and every fitting should light. Testing at this stage takes minutes; discovering a dead point after the painters have left takes a lot longer.

What are the most common installation mistakes?

These are the errors we most often see in DIY and rushed installations:

  • Cutting before checking the framing. A hole saw meeting a hidden framing member ruins the opening and weakens the ceiling, positions must be verified first.
  • No service access to drivers. Drivers buried deep in the void mean cutting the ceiling open when one fails years later.
  • Overloading one switching zone. Every light on a single switch wastes the flexibility the layout was designed for, and cramming too many fittings onto one point invites nuisance faults.
  • Oversized or ragged holes. Trims cannot hide a hole cut past the stated size; the board has to be patched and made good.
  • No slack left in the cables. Tight cables make fittings impossible to withdraw for future service.

Should you install ceiling lights yourself?

Cutting a neat hole is a skill; connecting mains wiring is a legal and safety matter.
