Why does a plaster ceiling need a drop at all?

A plaster ceiling is not glued to the concrete. It hangs on a frame of channels and hangers fixed to the soffit, the underside of the slab or roof structure, and the gap between the two, called the void, is where everything hides: electrical wiring, downlight housings, LED drivers, air-conditioning pipes and sometimes ducting.

That frame and those services need space. In common practice a flat design takes around 4–6 inches (roughly 100–150 mm) of height; an L-box adds a deeper perimeter step, and layered feature designs step down further again at their lowest tier. Treat these as typical working figures rather than a regulation, the real number for your home depends on what runs through your void.

What about beams and air-con ducting?

Beams and ducting are the usual reason a room cannot take one clean flat plane, and the answer is the bulkhead: a boxed plaster section that wraps the beam or duct, while the rest of the ceiling sits higher on either side. Instead of dropping the whole room to clear the lowest obstruction, only a strip drops.

Handled well, bulkheads become part of the design language, aligned with the L-box, used to zone the dining area from the living area, or carrying a row of downlights, so a structural necessity ends up looking deliberate.

When is a full plaster ceiling not advisable?

Occasionally the honest answer is "not here". Where the soffit is genuinely low, or the void is congested with services that cannot move, a full ceiling would leave the room feeling pressed down, and we will say so at the site visit rather than sell you a drop you will regret.
