A plaster ceiling installation runs through ten stages: measurement and design confirmation, level marking, metal framing, first-fix wiring, boarding, jointing, skim and sanding, downlight cut-in and second fix, painting (often handled by your own painter) and handover. How long it takes depends on the designs involved, contact us with your room details for an exact schedule with your free quotation.
Knowing how a plaster ceiling actually goes up helps you plan your renovation, prepare your home, and judge whether an installer is doing the job properly. Here is the process we follow on our own plaster ceiling installations, refined over jobs across the Klang Valley since 1999, step by step, in the order it happens on site.
What are the 10 steps of a plaster ceiling installation?
- Site measurement and design confirmation. We measure each room, confirm the design (flat, L-box, cove or bulkhead), agree the drop heights and mark out where downlights, LED strips and fans will go. This is also when the quotation is finalised, our guide to what affects plaster ceiling cost explains what goes into it.
- Marking levels and perimeter angle. A laser level projects the finished ceiling line around the room, and a perimeter wall angle is fixed to that line. Everything else hangs off this datum, so an accurate, dead-level line here decides whether the whole ceiling ends up straight.
- Suspension and metal furring. Hanger rods or brackets are fixed to the concrete soffit, and the main runners and furring channels are assembled into a level grid at the planned drop. This metal skeleton carries the entire ceiling, which is why framing quality matters more than anything you will later see.
- First-fix wiring. While the cavity is still open, cables are run to every planned downlight point, LED channel and switch drop. Decisions about lighting must be locked in now, see our downlight and LED guide if you are still choosing.
- Fixing the plasterboard. Gypsum boards are lifted, aligned and screwed to the furring at close, regular spacing, with joints staggered from row to row. Openings and curved sections are cut in as the boards go up, and wet areas get moisture-resistant board.
- Jointing and taping. Every board joint is reinforced with jointing tape bedded in compound, and screw heads are filled. Skipping or rushing this stage is the classic cause of hairline cracks appearing along joint lines months later.
- Skim coat and sanding. A thin skim is applied over the joints (or the full surface, depending on finish), left to dry, then sanded until the ceiling reads as one seamless plane. This is the dustiest part of the job.
- Cutting in downlights and second fix. Holes are cut at the marked positions, downlight fittings are installed, LED strips are laid into their channels, and every circuit is tested from the switches.
- Painting. The ceiling is sealed and painted with emulsion. In Malaysia this step is often handled by the owner's painter together with the rest of the house rather than by the ceiling crew, confirm in your quotation which arrangement applies.
- Cleanup and handover. Debris is removed, the surface is checked under raking light for visible joints or waves, the lighting is demonstrated, and the ceiling is handed over for painting or use.
How long does plaster ceiling installation take?
The honest answer: it depends on the job. Jointing compound needs drying time between coats, an L-box or curved design takes more work than a flat ceiling, and high areas that need scaffolding are slower again, so no two projects run to the same clock.
Rather than guess from an article, WhatsApp us your room sizes and chosen design, we will confirm the exact schedule together with your free quotation, before any work starts. If your ceiling is part of a larger renovation, the ceiling crew is scheduled after wet trades and rough wiring, and before painting, good sequencing saves time.
How should you prepare your home?
- Move furniture out of the room, or gather it centrally so it can be sheeted over
- Take down wall decorations, curtains and fragile items in the work area
- Finalise your lighting positions and fan locations before work starts
- For condos, arrange management approval, lift padding and worker access in advance
- Keep children and pets away from the work area for the duration
- Make a power point available for the crew's tools
- Confirm who handles painting, so the follow-on painter is booked at the right time
Who handles the painting?
Ceiling installers hand over a skimmed, sanded surface that is ready for paint, and in many Malaysian projects the owner's painter then seals and paints it together with the walls. That is usually the most economical arrangement during a renovation. If you prefer a fully finished handover, painting can be added to the ceiling quotation instead, the key is simply that the quotation states clearly which side of the line it falls on, and that painting waits until the skim has fully dried.
What does good workmanship look like?
You do not need to be a contractor to judge a finished ceiling. Look along the ceiling towards a window or shine a torch at a shallow angle: a well-built ceiling shows straight, level lines and no shadowy ridges along board joints. Downlight cut-outs should be crisp circles with fittings sitting flush, L-box edges should run parallel to the walls, and anywhere a fan is planned should have proper support fixed to the structure above, never to the board alone.
Just as telling is what you cannot see: framing at proper spacing, joints taped rather than merely filled, and a site left clean each day. Those habits are what separate a ceiling that stays perfect for decades from one that cracks within a year.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to install a plaster ceiling?
It depends on the design, the lighting scope and the site condition, jointing compound also needs drying time between coats. Contact us with your room details and we will confirm the exact schedule together with your free quotation.
Is plaster ceiling installation messy?
The dustiest stage is the skim and sanding work, and cutting boards creates some debris. A professional crew sheets over furniture and floors, contains the dust to the work area and clears the site at the end of each day, but expect some fine dust and plan to wipe down the room after handover.
Do I need to move out during installation?
For most homes, no. Work proceeds room by room, so you can usually keep living in the house while one area is being done. For a whole-house installation during a larger renovation, many owners simply schedule the ceiling work before moving in.
Is painting included in the installation?
Often it is not, in Malaysia the ceiling is commonly handed over skimmed and sanded, ready for the owner's painter to seal and paint along with the rest of the house. Always confirm in the written quotation whether painting is in or out of scope.
When should I decide my downlight positions?
Before the wiring first fix, which happens while the ceiling cavity is still open. Changing lighting positions after the boards are fixed means cutting the ceiling open again, so lock in your lighting plan early.
